IELTS Speaking band scores 4 th levle
The Speaking test takes between 11 and 14 minutes and consists of 3
parts. Part 1 is the first part of the test where the examiner will ask
you some general questions about familiar topics like work, family,
studies and hobbies.
In Part 2 you will be given a card with a topic. You will be given one minute to take notes on the topic and will be given a pencil and paper to prepare your response, you will then speak on the topic for two minutes. In Part 3 of the interview, you will have a two-way discussion with the examiner where they will ask questions related to the topic discussed in Part 2.
Band 4
Fluency and coherence
Cannot respond without noticeable pauses and may speak slowly, with frequent repetition and self-correction
Links basic sentences but with repetitious use of simple connectives and some breakdowns in coherence
Lexical resource
Is able to talk about familiar topics but can only convey basic meaning on unfamiliar topics and makes frequent errors in word choice
Rarely attempts paraphrase
Grammatical range and accuracy
Produces basic sentence forms and some correct simple sentences but subordinate structures are rare
Errors are frequent and may lead to misunderstanding
Pronunciation
Uses a limited range of pronunciation features
Attempts to control features but lapses are frequent
Mispronunciations are frequent and cause some difficulty for the listener
